This annual 5K is held in memory of Chief of Police, Val Courtney. All proceeds go to Victims of Domestic Violence by way of the Val Courtney Memorial Fund.
Val served on the Alabama State Defense Force, was a body guard for dignitaries, celebrities, and executives, was a black belt in various styles of Martial Arts, founded UKENDU Self Defense for Women, and was a Golden Gloves Boxer. He also volunteered at the Centre Elementary School to teach a Stranger Danger program and also served as the crossing guard where he always gave safety tips to children.
Val passed away on July 26, 2013, but his memory lives on through his friends, family, community, and these events.
