Boston Marathon 2018

Short review

The Boston Marathon is the oldest annual marathon in the world. It is held every third Monday of April, on the Patriot's Day

The history of this event begins in 1897. Inspired by the Olympic Games of 1896, Boston Athletic Association organized and held the first race, in which only 15 runners took part. The first to finish was John J. "JJ" McDermott in 2:55:10. For most of its history, the Boston Marathon was a free event, and the only prize awarded for winning the race was a wreath woven from olive branches.

Now, it is a major event, which usually gathers 30,000 runners from around the world and more than 500,000 spectators. Runners must qualify for entry by meeting time standards corresponding to gender and age, which is another aspect – besides its course and longevity – unique to the Boston Marathon.
