The 2020 Camp CARE 5K is just around the corner!
Did you know that this walk was originally started by a Camp CARE camper? He was so inspired by his summer camp experience that he wanted to do something to make sure that all children with cancer would find the same joy, new friendships and fun that he found at camp. That camper was Paul Jon (P.J.) St. Martin. In the fall of 1994, 16 year old P.J. started the first walkathon…in a wheelchair. Twenty years later, it has evolved into a 5K run/walk and is the largest fund raiser for Camp CARE.
So how did Zack get involved? Zack became part of the Camp CARE family in 1992. He was a camper, then a counselor, and eventually sat on the board of directors. When the St. Martin’s asked if Zack’s name could be added to the walkathon, his family was honored. Camp CARE provided support, friendship, laughter and a sense of extended family for him. It also provided an opportunity to be with others who understood the experience and impact of having childhood cancer. These young men epitomize what Camp CARE stands for!
