Short review
The 5th Annual Veterans and First Responders Memorial 5k run/walk and Memorial Mile run/walk helps raise funds for the Southern Arizona Veterans and First Responders Living Memorial at Naranja Park. The memorial will be a place where people can go and reflect; they can honor their forefathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles – whoever served. It will be an opportunity for education about veterans as well as first responders – they are equals in this memorial.
All participants who sign up by April 30, 2021, will receive an event shirt. Everyone will receive a custom race bib (sponsored by Fleet Feet) and a custom finisher's keychain.
Awards5k Awards (Trail and Run divisions) will be given to the Top Three Male and Female overall winners, as well as gift certificates from Fleet Feet.
Medallions will also be given to the Top Three Male and Female in each Age Group. Age groups are: <14; 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70-79; 80>.
Awards will be available for pick up at the Oro Valley Fleet Feet beginning at noon on Saturday, May 15. We will announce all winners on Facebook Live. There will be no awards ceremony at the venue.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and the need to adhere to CDC and local government guidelines to maintain social distancing, we will use wave starts to spread out runners on the course. You will be able to choose your start time during registration. Once a time slot is filled, it's filled. No exceptions. We will allow 20 participants to the start field at a time.
Start Time SlotsWhen registering, participants will be asked to select a start time slot - WAVES.
Waves for the road race will start at 0630 and go off every 5 minutes until 0710.
Waves for the trail race will start at 0715 and go off every 5 minutes until 0755.
If you miss your wave, you cannot start in the next wave. You will have to wait until all waves in your division have started to begin your race. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Participants must be lined up at one of the start cones BEFORE beginning their race. There is a limit of 20 starting positions available for each starting time slot and they are available on a first come, first serve basis. In order to maintain safe distancing on the race course, participants must start during their selected starting time slot. If a particular starting time is not available it means it has reached the maximum number of participants for that time slot. Please do not ask us to make any exceptions, because we will not.
PARTICIPANTS ARE ASKED TO ARRIVE AT THE RACE VENUE NO MORE THAN 20 MINUTES BEFORE THEIR OFFICIAL START TIME.
Race CourseThe road race will be held entirely entirely on the pedestrian path on Tangerine and the short dirt road leading in and out of the park to the north.
The trail race will be held entirely within the Naranja Park and will utilized most of the archery course.
The memorial mile is a walk up the dirt road to the turnaround and then back down.
This is a BYOB event - bring your own bottle of hydration. You must be 100% self-sufficient. There will be no aid stations on the course.

THERE IS NO ONSITE/RACE DAY REGISTRATION. You must register online by 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2021.
RACE DAY REQUIREMENTSALL participants must have their bib number PINNED TO THE FRONT OF THEIR SHIRT, and must adhere to the following requirements:
You must be 100% self-sufficient. There are no water stops or refreshments on the course.You must follow all CDC safe distancing guidelines.You must be in good health and symptom free from any illness for at least 2 weeks prior to the event.Your bib number with timing chip must be pinned to the FRONT SIDE of your shirt and must not be obstructed or covered up in any way.When it's your time to approach the start line, you MUST BE WEARING A MASK. You will be REQUIRED to stand next to one of the start cones on the field. The cones are at least 6 feet apart. Participants will not be allowed to congregate or conduct any race preparation (warm-ups, stretching, adjusting or changing apparel, etc.) in the starting area. APPROACH THE STARTING LINE READY TO RUN.When you start racing, you can remove your mask while running. You must put on your mask as you cross the finish line.Except for passing, participants should always remain on the far right-hand side of the pathway. Participants passing one another on the course must adhere to “no drafting” rules which include being no closer than 10 feet behind or in front of, or 6 feet beside other competitors at any time. Participants may pass only when there are not any oncoming runners approaching from the opposite direction. Before passing participants must be sure they can safely remain 10 feet behind and then 10 feet in front of the participant being overtaken before merging back to the right-hand side of the trail.After completing your run and crossing the finish line, you must continue moving towards the exit of the finish area. You can pick up a sack treat and water bottle as you leave. Participants will be required to leave the finish line area and proceed immediately to their vehicle as soon as they complete their race. No congregating of any type will be permitted either before, during, or after the event.
Failure to adhere to any of the stated race requirements will result in the immediate disqualification of the participant.

Please keep in mind that your cooperation and adherence to all safe distancing practices is the key to us, and other races, being able to offer competitive events like this in the foreseeable future.
