Short review
According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, each day roughly 20 Veterans commit suicide.
What’s more alarming is that veteran suicide accounts for 18% of all suicides deaths while Veterans only make up 8.5% of the adult population. We hope to change that.
The 4th Annual Soldier’s Pace Canicross Race will be a 5k timed race through sprawling Smiling Hills Farms, in Westbrook, Maine just minutes from Portland. The race and all proceeds are to benefit “K9s on the Front Line,” a nonprofit organization that works to rescue shelter dogs by training them to be certified service dogs and thus fit to assist suffering PTSD/TBI military veterans.
The sport of canicross is an event in which one runs with their dog. A harness or belt around the waist is worn by the human runner, and a harness is worn by the dog. The dog, in more competitive events, is to run in front of the person at all times, though in amateur gatherings exceptions are made! It is a pulling sport for some, with active vigorous participation from the human and for others it is a stroll with man’s best friend by their side. The beauty is the health benefit for both participants on an outside trail setting.
The separate 5k trail run for those who would prefer to run without a dog! The event is open to all trail runners to wishing to participate at this scenic venue.
In addition to the races, there will be pet activities, music, pet vendors as well as photography. There are going to be a number of kid-focused activities including a clever compilation of Maine-themed obstacles beginning with a sleeping bag scoot under a tented table and ending with a mock-marshmallow roast. The kids run is .3 miles and will begin at 10:30a.
After the races participants are encouraged to time enjoying the “farmscape”.
Our event date is September 22rd, and we’d love to invite you to be a part of it! The event will take place between 9am and 1p, and the first race will begin at 9am.
Note: Please register before September 3rd to secure a T-shirt.
See you there!
