This trail is straight up followed by going straight down. The views on top of Mt Mitchell are worth the 2+ hours worth of climbing. Expect 4-8 hours round trip for this run depending on ability. Be sure to take your picture at the Mt. Mitchell summit (highest point east of the mississippi Route HERE Intermediate - Mitchell trail to the crest, down big tom, across buncombe horse trail, down mitchell trail (~14 miles) This route adds some difficulty to the run by adding the crest trail. The crest trail is technical with plenty of roots and rocks. Once you hit the Big Tom peak, you take a right and head down the Big Tom trail. This trail is usually overgrown and slippery so take your time! The buncombe horse trail runs parallel to the crest trail and will take you back to the Mitchell trail. Then enjoy the downhill back to camp. Expect 4-10 hours depending on ability. Route HERE Experienced - Death before DNF course, mitchell trail to buncombe horse trail to colbert’s ridge, to crest trail, to Mt Mitchell, down mitchell back to camp (~25 miles 7500 ft of gain) This route is not for the faint of heart. This will be an 8-12 hour day depending on ability. This loop is the original camp loop that was apart of the first year of camp with the Death before DNF 100 miler (4 loops). This loop also takes you up two very tough and technical climbs (Mitchell and Colert’s Ridge) Route HERE Other options are available if you do not want to go up the mountain. It’s best to match up with someone of the same ability and stick together. Dinner- Soup/Chili Sunday (Recovery/free day/pack up) Take a rest day or a recovery run on any other trail in the park. The Mountains to Sea Trail is a good option and can be run as an out and back. Connecting to the river trail another option is finding the Green Knob Fire Tower. (~7 miles, 2500 ft of gain) There is plenty of gravel roads around if you want to head north or south on River Toe for some easy rolling mileage Pack up and leave. There is an option to stay until Monday morning.
