Orphans versus Lost Souls (all social distancing) CANCELLED FOR 2020 2020

© © Orphans versus Lost Souls (all social distancing) CANCELLED FOR 2020

Short review

Note:  This is the rubber match between the Orphans (women) and Lost Souls (men) with each team boasting a win over the last two years!!

The Orphans are social distancing and the Lost Souls have recently been shut ins but they're ready to come out on Saturday, July 18th, while maintaining compliance with special rules including physical distancing (minimum six feet separation) and provisions (wearing masks when not running) in place to enhance the safety of participants, organizers and hosts (with no spectators).

Special Notes: The two races will be capped at 10 runners in each. Race 1, the longer of the two will be filled on first come first served registration basis, with Race 2 being filled for those who register later. (Race 1 is the default registration first choice and if 10 or fewer register Race 2 will be cancelled.) However, with this being a relatively small race, changes will be entertained before the start as long as the cap of 10 in each is not exceeded. When not running, participants are asked to wear masks. A limited supply of masks will be available for anyone who may have forgotten to bring their own mask. Runners should space themselves along the road for the start and announce the intent to pass while swinging wide, keeping in mind a 10 foot clearance from another runner, while avoiding what is normally very little traffic on the rural roads.

This race event is included in the increasingly popular RaBa Cinco series (Raton Basin area of Colorado and New Mexico). What makes this event special is that there are exciting competitions on multiple levels including women versus men (with the races structured to level the playing field so they compete in a single division), county team competition, and individual award competition. In addition, with the course location just east of the East Peak of the scenic Spanish Peaks Country, there is even a bit of adventure thrown in, particularly if you aren't one of the locals. The event gets it's name based on the fact that it takes place on the border of Huerfano (orphan translation) County and Las Animas (loosely translated as Lost Souls) County in Southern Colorado. The racing turf consists of the dirt/gravel Las Animas County Road 41.4 and a short portion of CR 54.2. Everyone from everywhere is welcome, but residents of the three county region - including Colfax County, NM, automatically score points in the 2020 RaBa Cinco team competition. Individual awards will be made to the top three finishers in each of the two races (second and third place, with the race winner taking home the Team Champion Award). Given concerns associated with the pandemic, runners are asked to bring their own refreshments. This is also why the race has been shortened from past years. Per local Health Department advice, no food will be provided for this event.

Assembly and race instructions take place at 146 West Main Street in Aguilar, CO, in the park area near the Library from 7:45 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. THERE WILL BE NO RACE DAY REGISTRATION (online registration only). The race hosts will lead a caravan from Aguilar to the starting area which will have a portable toilet at that location. (Hand sanitizer will be provided but you are encouraged to bring single use packets as well.) Please be aware that restroom facilities are not available at the Aguilar assembly location.

The first race will start at 8:30 a.m. with males running 2.5 miles and women concurrently running 2.3 miles - from their respective starting lines - to the Huerfano County Line and back to the common finish line at the intersection of CR 41.4 and CR 54.2. The second race will begin at 9:15 a.m., with women running 10 minutes and men running 8 minutes and 46 seconds. The order of finish for the second race will be determined by who has covered the greatest distance. The event concludes upon completion of the second race without the traditional post race gathering and official Awards ceremony. Your understanding regarding the unusual precautions is appreciated. This should be fun even with the special adaptations!
