Kili Trails is a celebration of the outdoors on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro -- a weekend of trail running, mountain biking, camping, food vendors and live music, with something for every member of the family.

Trail Run Events

Kilimanjaro Trails Festival offers five separate run events throughout the weekend, and two of them are FREE! Walkers are welcome to join a number of the events, and Swala Sprint will have team categories. There’s even one event in which we encourage you to carry a G&T. We’re so pleased there’s something for everyone.

Kili Trails Half Marathon
Our all new half marathon is a 21 kilometer loop run on West Kili Forest single track | approximately 620 meters climbing and some incredible old growth forest running | 2 basic feed zones on course | first 50 registered runners (who also finish) receive medals | racers under 17 must run with an adult

Forest Trails Run
A shorter (approximately 10 kilometer) version of the half marathon, and the two races start together | utilizes West Kili Forest and farm single track | approximately 230 meters climbing | first 50 registered runners (who also finish) receive medals |  no water or feed zones on course | racers under 13 must run with an adult | walkers welcome

Swala Sprint
An approximately 6 kilometer loop run entirely on Simba Farm property | 100 meters climbing | open to both individuals and teams | medals will be awarded to 1st place teams and all U13 finishers | no feed zones | suitable for most ages | racers under 8 must run with an adult | walkers welcome

Rafiki Run
A(n approximately) 1.5 kilometer loop run entirely within view of the race village | all finishers under 10 receive medals | FREE, but does require registration

Sundowner Stroll
Join us for a leisurely stroll, drink in hand, to the viewpoint as the sun sets. Participation is FREE and no registration required. But BYOB (bring your own beverage)!

Mountain Bike Events

Five mountain bike events offer a variety of terrains, distances, and even modes of racing. New this year we have lap and short course racing, a Le Mans start in the XCM, a FREE race on offer, and team categories in the XCC events. There’s sure to be an event you’ll enjoy!

Kili Trails XCM
Our Cross-Country Marathon course is a 75 (er… between 65 and 85) kilometer loop into Enduimet Wildlife Management Area and back, animals aplenty | approximately 1200 meters of climbing | new for this year: a LE MANS start!!! | 2 basic feed zones on course | no medals for this event, but finishers will receive a small gift | racers under 17 must ride with an adult

West Kili Forest XCO
Our version of the Cross-Country Olympic event is 3 laps of approximately 10 kilometers, alternating between West Kili Forest single track and Simba Farm property | total climbing 700 meters over 30 kilometers | no feed zones, but racer’s personal bags available each lap at start line | first 70 registered cyclists (who also finish) receive medals | racers under 13 must ride with an adult

West Kili Forest XCO
The Mini Cross-Country Olympic event is a single loop of the XCO course, and the races begin together | approximately 230 meters climbing over the 10 kilometer loop into West Kili Forest | all finishers under 13 receive medals | racers under 13 must ride with an adult | no feed zones | this course is terrific for both beginners and (determined) children

Simba Farm XCC
The most exciting race of the weekend, our Cross-Country Short Course is 8 high speed laps on a 1.5 kilometer loop entirely within view of the race village | this crowd-pleasing 12 kilometer event is all about top end speed, bike handling, and max heart rates | XCC finish will determine starting order for Sunday’s XCO | open to both individuals and teams | medals will be awarded to 1st place teams and all U13 finishers | this event will be run in heats

Kafupi XCC
A 4-lap version of the full Cross-Country Short Course, this event is approximately 6 kilometers | open to both individuals and teams | medals will be awarded to 1st place teams and all U13 finishers | not a child specific race, any cyclist is welcome to enter | heats will be based on age and experience | FREE, but does require registration

Cash or Mobile Money Payments

Our default and preferred method of payment is credit card. If, however, you would like to pay by mobile money, we can accommodate this. Please email us for instructions on how to do so. Mobile money payments will require a service charge of 9%.

Alternatively, we will offer registration services at a few locations in Tanzania prior to the event. At these registration events we will receive cash, mobile money, and credit card payments with no added service charges. Please subscribe to our email list to be made aware of these events. Our first registration event will be at Arusha Christmas Fair at UWC Arusha Campus on 28-29 November.

 

Tanzania / Kenya Citizen Rates

Several of our races pass through West Kilimanjaro Forest (TZ Forestry Services land) or Enduimet Wildlife Management Area. These entities have lower charges for TZ / KE citizens, and we want to pass those savings on to you. Once you have registered, please forward us a copy of your email receipt together with a photo / scan of your NIDA card (TZ) or proof of citizenship (KE). Once citizenship has been confirmed, we will refund the following amount to your credit card or mobile money account:

Team Competitions

Team competitions for 2021 will take place in conjunction with our Swala Sprint run and Simba Farm XCC MTB events. You can represent your school, choose to participate with family and friends, or organize a corporate team to show off your company’s athleticism (or at least your fashionable matching t-shirts). Team rules, scoring, and pricing are as follow:

XC run teams consist of 4-6 runners. Each runner is awarded points equal to his/her category finish place (i.e. 1st place = 1 pt and 12th place = 12 pts). Your team score is the sum of your fastest 4 finishers’ points. Lowest overall score wins. Run team divisions will be U11, U13, and U19 male and female, as well as open coed.XCC MTB teams consist of up to 3-4 cyclists, at least one of each gender. Each cyclist is awarded points according to his/her overall finish place (i.e. 1st place = 1 pt and 12th place = 12 pts). Your team score is the sum of points awarded to your fastest 3 cyclists, not the same gender. Lowest overall score wins. MTB team divisions will be U11, U13, U19, and open coed.

 

Festival & Entertainment

Kili Trails is more than a weekend of sporting events. Celebrate the outdoors with friends. Relish excellent food and drink, with a variety of international cuisines on offer. Enjoy live music from talented local artists, as well as event playlists that appeal to all. Enjoy a game of corn hole or toss a frisbee with friends. Bring a tent and the family!

All camping fees and race registration fees include festival entry, restrooms and hot water showers, security, access to food vendors and entertainment, and all fees and taxes. Festival entry for non-racers and non-campers is $4 per day. Children under 12 are FREE, but do require to be registered under and adult's name.

 

Camping & Facilities

The Kili Trails race village offers restrooms, hot water showers, 24-hour security, and of course a nice, big campfire. Bring the whole family and celebrate the outdoors.

There will be an upper (and separate) campsite available as an option for schools and families with small children.Campsites will be granted on a  first come, first served basis.There will be no pets, outside alcohol, or personal open fires permitted at KTF.Illegal drugs are absolutely forbidden, and KTF will not hesitate to inform the police of any and all violations.Live and/or loud music will end at 10pm on both Friday and Saturday nights, though music will be played at lower levels until midnight. Please situate your campsite accordingly.
