Short review
6th Annual Hugh Glass Dash
www.HughGlassDash.com
When: August 22, 2021
Where: Blacktail Trailhead: Trailhead is well-marked and located 16 miles south of Lemmon, SD on Highway 73.
Time: Race-day registration and packet pickup is at 7am MST; Race starts at 8am MST
Race Fee: Race is free. Would be sweet if you bought a t-shirt or donated something (to help offset costs) but totally not required.
The Hugh Glass Dash is a 7-mile run held in the spirit of prairie perseverance and grit. Taking place on the Blacktail Trail, runners will cover the same ground that Hugh Glass (recently made famous by Leo’s Oscar-winning portrayal in ‘The Revenant’) likely crawled over after being mauled by a grizzly bear on the Grand River.
This is a no-frills race with no on-course aid stations. If, while traversing the 7-mile backcountry loop, you need water, you better carry it with you. The Hugh Glass Dash will not make the Runner’s World “Top 10 Swag Bags.” There is no swag bag. The optional t-shirt is pretty sweet, though.
What you do get: Upon finish, a cold beer and some raw buffalo to cook over the campfire. Also a shot at a modest cash prize. You’ll have conquered a hilly, beautiful, isolated course that is located more than 100 miles from the nearest stoplight. All participants will get right of first refusal for a bib in next year’s race.
Entries are limited to 50 participants.
While there will be no aid stations, the course will be cleared by cowboys on horseback. This ensures that your carcass is scraped off the ground before any coyotes make off with your appendages. You’re welcome.
Road Running
Distance:
10K to Half Marathon
Organized since 2016
