Founded in 1976 by Dr. Art Mollena local physician and founder and president of the Southwest Health Institute, this event became one of the biggest marathons in U.S. It set the charge used to ignite the running boom in Arizona. Olympic Gold medalists, American record holders have visited this race over the years.
The race features a 5K, 10K, Half-Marathon, and the Mollen Mile, which is a one-mile run for all kids between ages six and 12. Its straight course features urbanistic views of downtown in Phoenix, as well as the mountains surrounding the city.
In addition, race organizers are offering special money prizes to the first male and female 10K runners to break the race records.
The race benefits the Mollen Foundation to prevent childhood obesity.
